Dindefelo Falls

Dindefelo Falls, located in the town of Dindefelo, is a tourist attraction and park in southeast Senegal. It is located just a few miles from the Guinean border. The falls are about 100 meters high. The park area forms part of the larger Niokolo-Koba National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere world heritage site. UNESCO estimates the annual tourist visits to the falls in the thousands.

Dindefelo is located about 35k south of Kedougou at the base of the Guinean plateau. It is a relatively small but well-equipped Pulaar village with a middle school, health post, and a weekly luumo market that functions as the economic and social center of this rural, mountainous region. Nestled into the mountains that form the border with Guinea, Dindefelo is a sprawling village of round mud huts and a center for Pula Futa culture.

Dindefelo is best known for its natural beauty; in the village it’s impossible to escape the surrounding mountains of the Guinean plateau. An easy 40-minute hike through lush forest will bring you to the Dindefelo waterfall, a 100m graceful chute that appears seemingly from nowhere. The area recently became a protected natural reserve for chimpanzees and is a haven for bird-watchers as well. Dindefelo’s proximity to the waterfall hike in Segou and the steep hike to Dandé provide an array of options for the nature-adventure enthusiast. Its bustling weekly market and boutiques, in addition to the friendly and rustic campements, provide countless opportunities to interact with villagers, who are friendly and welcoming.
